[Author's Note: Some parents may find this box too scatological for their kids.]

For folks who don't spend all their time eagerly solving cryptic crosswords, a bit of tutelage is in order. Here are some websites that explain very basic forms of cryptic clues:

The puzzle at hand is not a crossword, but each cryptic clue, when solved, will reveal the next word or phrase in your instructions. The numbers in parentheses after a clue tell you both how many words you are seeking, and how many letters are in each.

I've tried not to stray into any of the less common clue forms, but still this will probably be difficult. Remember that a word form which makes sense within the clue's pseudo-sentence is not necessarily the correct interpretation of that word when it becomes a solving tool.

Take, for example, the clue “Retiring verb is without retro beading.”
--“Retiring” is an adjective that refers to the word “verb,” but it also a verb that is a simile of the solution word: RE-TREADING
--As part of the sentence, “is without” means “doesn't have,” but if we remember that “without” can also be the opposite of “within,” then we know that we are looking for a verb made from the outsides of the phrase “RETRo bEADING.”

Enough lecturing. Get solving!
