*FYI, there has recently (July 2006) been a series of letterboxes planted near-by. You might want to check them out too.*

Perhaps you are like me, and some of your friends or family members have told you to cut back on your coffee consumption. Here is an easy test to see if you are up for being ‘Decaffeinated.’

This box is located in Van Patten Woods near Wadsworth IL. If you travel between Milwaukee and Chicago, you’ve probably passed this park many times. The park offers the large Sterling Lake with fishing, several miles of hiking, a model airplane field, horse trails, and canoe and boat launches. The park is just east of I-94 and Route 41 south of the junction of these two highways. Exit the highway at route 173. (I'm unsure if you can exit at 173 from I94 going south...)

After entering the park, turn right immediately after the ranger station. Follow the main road to the first parking area on the right (past Shelter B and the playground).

Take the path at the end of the parking lot and follow it into the woods. You will soon be faced with a choice. Suppress you’re urge to ‘exit’ your caffeine-free test and instead follow the path at 45 degrees. At the next choice, continue to persevere and stay on the main trail. Perhaps some coffee or a big soda would hit the spot right about now? Don’t worry, you are almost there. As you approach the next opportunity to abort this test, you will see a small path leading east away from the trail and parking lots. Follow this dirt path until it begins to turn north. Spy the large tree just south of the trail (about nine paces off the trail, this tree is at 210 degrees from the middle of the turn). Follow a reading of 195 degrees from this large tree to find a large horizontal trunk. Your goal is hidden inside the east end of that sleepy tree that is resting on the ground (perhaps IT needs a pick me up!). Now you can honestly claim to have tried ‘Decaffeinated.’

I included a pair of markers (although my sources tell me that they might not be ideal as they are washable). Be aware, the final dirt trail might be muddy after rain or snow.
