Adder’s Tongue
Difficulty: Easy
Time: maybe 20 min.
You might want to bring along clues for Stratton Brook Spur Trail.
We didn’t see any Adder’s tongue here, but I did see some on the trail to our Four Seasons boxes in the spring.
Clues:
From the junction of Routes 10 and 167 in Simsbury, head West along Route 167. At the junction of Routes 167 and 309, turn left and continue along Route 167 to Stratton Brook road. Take a right on Stratton Brook road and then a left onto Town Forest road. Less then a mile down the road, Town Forest Park will be on your right. There is a small swimming pond and a bridge over the old railroad trestle here. When the paved road turns to gravel, look to your left for a stone dust trail beside a ball field. You may park here. Follow this trail to the west as it heads into the woods.
Notice the ditch on the right side of the trail. When the ditch comes to an end, you should see an unmarked trail to the left. Take this trail. Soon you’ll be walking through pine trees, going uphill and a little down. Look for a V tree next to a woodpecker tree on the right. Bushwhack beyond the woodpecker tree down the slope to the long rotting log. Adder’s Tongue is hidden at the SE end of the log. Be sure that leaves and sticks cover it completely before you leave.
Return to the trail and retrace your steps to your car.
