I love letterboxing in Connecticut. It is such a pleasure to hike through the cool woods and meander along the trails by cheerful brooks and the beautiful rock fences. However, I live in Texas where, as the song goes, the stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas. I guess I’ll have to take their word for it because between Dallas and Fort Worth where I live, the lights of the cities make it pretty difficult to see the stars these days. In many places in Connecticut though, those same stars shine brilliantly and are a joy to see. So here’s to Texas and Connecticut and all those beautiful stars in the sky we both share!

Caution: This is a pretty rugged trail and may not be appropriate for small children or icy conditions.

Driving Directions to the trailhead:
Find Main Street in Beacon Falls (follow signs for Hwy 42 off Hwy 8 which is exit 23 going north or 24 going south). Go north on Main to Depot Street and cross through the iron bridge over the Naugatuck River. Immediately after the bridge, turn right onto Lopus Road and go over the railroad bridge. Just after the railroad, turn right onto Cold Spring Road. Shortly, it will turn into a dirt road and runs beside the railroad track. The road will fork but stay to the right downhill until the road makes a sharp turn to the left just past a small bridge. There will be a parking lot on the left. Park and cross back over the bridge where you will find the trail going uphill on your right (beside the river).

Hiking Directions:
The trail starts at the bridge over Spruce Brook on the south side of the bank. It follows along the river, first making a vigorous climb high above the river below. Just as the trail starts to level off, you will come to a fallen tree across the trail that you will have to pass under. Continue to follow the trail, up and down, sometimes clamoring up slick rocks or narrow cliff passages high above the river and a beautiful series of waterfalls. In about 20 minutes (give or take depending on how much time you spend enjoying the falls beside you) you will come to a log across the path which is about 16” in diameter. About 42 paces (84 steps) after stepping over this log, you will come to a Y where the trail subtly goes uphill on the left or continues straight and goes down by the river. Follow the trail going straight and down and soon you come to a place where the river makes a sharp turn to the left where you will either have to cross the river or clamor up the boulders on your left. You will notice two trees “sitting” on top of the boulders to your left. Climb up to the second tree (the one to your right when facing the boulders) and look in the rock cavern under the tree behind a pile of rocks for your treasure.
