(Thanks to Puddle-Splasher for helping Molly find a nice place to visit on her vacation.)

Molly the Longhorn has many responsibilities. From her vantage point above the entrance to the historic Fort Worth Livestock Exchange Building, she oversees all the activity along Exchange Avenue in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards district: the daily longhorn cattle drive up Exchange Avenue; rodeo cowboys coming and going around the rodeo coliseum next door; daily arrival and departures of the Tarantula Steam train, not to mention the big roundtable and steam whistle; tourists and cowboys mingling in front of the old White Elephant Saloon or on their way to Billy Bob’s dancehall around the corner. Frequently there’s a street dance or a gunfight re-enactment or a big parade. Yes, there’s enough activity on Exchange Avenue to keep Molly very busy. In addition, there’s Molly’s role as the official logo of the City of Fort Worth, an honor not to be taken lightly. But Molly has seen many, many hot Texas summers, and when the temperature hit the 100-degree mark in mid-April this year, she decided she needed a little vacation. Molly thought of a place with cooler weather, with forested hiking trails and cool mountain streams. Molly took off for a New England vacation. Molly went to Connecticut! Who knows just how long Molly the Longhorn will stay, so hike on up the trail and visit her while you can.

Driving Directions to the trailhead:
Find Main Street in Beacon Falls (follow signs for Hwy 42 off Hwy 8 which is exit 23 going north or 24 going south). Go north on Main to Depot Street and cross through the iron bridge over the Naugatuck River. Immediately after the bridge, turn right onto Lopus Road and go over the railroad bridge. Just after the railroad, turn right onto Cold Spring Road. Shortly, it will turn into a dirt road and runs beside the railroad track. The road will fork but stay to the right downhill until the road makes a sharp turn to the left just past a small bridge. There will be a parking lot on the left. Park and cross back over the bridge where you will find the trail going uphill on your right (beside the river).

Hiking Directions:
The trail starts at the bridge over Spruce Brook on the south side of the bank. It follows along the river, first making a vigorous climb high above the river below. Just as the trail starts to level off, you will come to a fallen tree across the trail that you will have to pass under. Just after the fallen tree, take a compass reading of 310 degrees and you will see a tree stump up the hill about 30 feet from where you are standing. Climb up to the tree stump and you will find Molly the Longhorn.
