The town of Creel in Chihuahua, Mexico is considered one of the best jumping off points for those who want to venture into the depths of the Copper Canyon. And the “depths of the canyon” is where you will find this letterbox. Begin by leaving Creel and heading toward Batopilas (you will go almost all the way there—and should go on into the town at some point just to check it out). The drive will take somewhere between 4-6 hours, depending on the road conditions and how often you stop to “ooh and aah.” You WILL need a high clearance vehicle, if not 4WD (and a second spare is never a bad idea in these parts).
Just a few KM before you arrive in the town of Batopilas, you will come to the Hacienda Rio Batopilas Margaritas on the left hand side of the road. Stop your car here and get out. If you are in need of a hotel, this is an amazing one. I figure if you’ve made it this far, you’ve been through enough (but I hope you enjoyed the views!), so the rest of the hunt is be pretty easy and straightforward.
Directly in front of the hotel is a very steep staircase (and I don’t mean the bigger one off to the side.) Beginning right in front of the steep staircase, follow the road in a northerly direction for about 95 paces. You will see the opening to an old mineshaft on your right. DO NOT GO IN! The road now curves slightly NW; follow it for another 48 paces. Now you will see a shrine on your right. Continue to the end of the shrine (painted green). Turn to your right just after the shrine and head up the hillside at about 40 degrees NE and go about 16 paces. The letterbox is in a crevasse under a large boulder. We get down here about 4 times a year, so please let us know if the letterbox is in need of attention.
