Piedra River Hot Springs is a little-known natural hot springs on the banks of the Piedra River. Since it is a wilderness location, it is also a "clothing-optional" springs, but when we were there, we were the only ones. Pool temps are 107 degrees.

Terrain: Moderate. About 1.5 miles each way, but about an 800 foot descent going in (and therefore, an 800 foot climb coming out).
Clues: Easy (the hike back is hard enough).

Directions: From Pagosa Springs, take 160 west about 22 miles and turn right (north) on First Fork road. Follow this dirt road about 6.8 miles north to the intersection with Monument Park Road and the parking area. Find the Sheep Creek trailhead.

Clues: Follow the trail to the Piedra River. If in doubt, always choose the right fork in the trail. At the Piedra River, go right (don't miss this turnoff coming back). When you cross the first small stream, you're getting near. About 30 paces before you cross a second small stream, there is a large log cut into three sections to make the trail clear. From this log, look to your right for two trees, and behind them, a large rock. The box is here. 40 paces past the second stream, the trail opens into a grassy area where people camp. Upon entering the grassy area, take a left turn to the river and you should be overlooking the makeshift pools of the hot springs. Box naked!
