Difficulty: Good for mountain goats.

Clues revised 7/16/2008

Directions:
From West Simsbury center, (FD, PO), continue on Rt. 309 toward the Master’s School entrance. Take Hedgehog Rd. to the right a little before the Master’s School Sign. Turn left onto Saddle Ridge Rd., pass Lenora Drive at the stop sign and drive half way around the cul de sac at the end. Park on the road near the two stone pillars that mark the trail entrance. (Same starting point as Gilbert & Sullivan #2.)

Follow the obvious trail into the woods that is now blazed white, climbing to the top of the waterfall. Continue on white to the intersection with red. Turn right, over the bridge and immediately right again, continuing now on red. Climb until reaching a lovely view of the valley. After enjoying the view, continue on.
After the double red blaze, stop at the 3rd red blaze. There will be rocks to the right and ahead to the left. From the blazed tree, take a reading of 110*, walk under the leaning tree to the drop off. BE CAREFUL! Stand between 2 cedars with a 3rd cedar ahead and down the bank. Turn to 200* and look beyond 2 small stumps to some rocks. The narrow rock beside 2 larger ones marks the door to the “bear cave”. Collect your first hug. Please “close the door” completely so that this “cave” isn’t obvious but making sure the narrow rock still helps mark the spot. Thanks.

Continuing on red you’ll find yourself climbing again. After passing a rocky ledge on the left the trail levels off for a bit. There is now a valley on either side of you. Climb some more and arrive at Rocky Top. Green letters on the rocks are now quite faded. Climb to the top of the rocks and look for the large green spot on a rock (faded) near the cedar trees. Another great place to view the valley.

From the green spot look at 240* to an large, dead juniper. Make your way to the backside of this tree remnant. About 18 inches downhill from its base you you should find the 2nd bear cave.

After enjoying the view, retrace your steps down the red trail, turning left after the bridge onto white. Make your way carefully back to your vehicle.
