Springtime Menagerie
Glastonbury, CT – Shenipsit Trail

Directions:
The Shenipsit Trail crosses Rt. 94. From the Junction of Rt. 83 and Rt. 94 drive 2.6 miles east and take a left onto Hill Street - a gravel road that takes you to the trailhead. From Birch Mountain Road - .1 miles west to Hill Street on right.

Difficulty:
Easy to moderate – typical CT rolling hills with a few steep inclines and descents. Allow 1 ½ hours for hiking and stamping.

There is one logbook at the third box.

Clues:

You will remain on the blue blaze trail unless otherwise instructed. You will see # 53 on the tree where your journey begins. Follow the blue blaze trail. Shortly you will see a stone wall on your right. Continue until you come to a fir tree about 8 feet off the right side of the trail. Take a reading of 90 degrees to the base of a fallen tree. Look at the bottom of the small ledge rocks at its base for Marching of the Chicks.

Go back to the trail. Continue through a stone wall then under power lines. At #56 – stay on the blue blaze trail. (left y) Continue until the blue/white blaze joins in from the right. At this spot, stop in the center of the Y next to the small tree growing in the middle of it. At 290 degrees, 17 paces you will come to the end of a stone wall. Now at 280 degrees you will see a 6 foot long boulder. Go to it. Looking straight ahead you should see another stone wall. Walk on the southerly side of the wall, pass an opening, then find a large tree with a small split in the trunk, whose “swollen left arm” is hanging over the wall. 4 more steps and a trap door will bring you to Lady Slipper.

Retrace your steps and return to the trail. Continue on the Shenipsit Trail until you come to a logging road. Go right on the road until you come to where the blue/white blaze intersects it. There is a nice lazy daisy stream crossing the trail, but no need to get your feet wet. Look upstream and go to the tree that is growing over a very large boulder. Standing on the west side, go to the large beech tree at 230 degrees. From here, walk in a south westerly direction uphill about 28 paces, which will bring you to a long rock outcropping at the top. Walk on the east side until you see a large tree abutting the outcropping. Here you will find Pinwheel. Go back down to the stream and follow the logging road back to the blue blaze trail, then turn left and follow it back to your car, remembering to stay on blue blazes only – not any other color combination.

Thanks for looking and Enjoy!
