This box has been retired and is no longer available.

This quilt block is not a traditional pieced block like Grandma would have made. It is a pattern which is cut out and appliquéd onto the background fabric. The blocks are individually made and then many of them are sewn together to make the quilt. In this case, the block is called simply a “Turtle” because of its shape and the quilt is called “Turtle Stampede”. Imagine, if you will, a dozen or more turtle blocks, all facing the same direction. Stampede! It’s just a fun thing to do. When we were scouting out a location for this block, as we started across the iron bridge over Winters Bayou, the sound of our footsteps caused the turtles to abandon their sunny resting spots and hit the water with multiple splashes. It brought a vision of this quilt and a smile to my face. When you cross the bridge, walk softly to avoid a Turtle Stampede!

Directions:
From Houston, take U.S. 59 North to Cleveland. Exit at S.H. 105 and turn left under Hwy. 59. Go about 1/2 mile to FM 1725 and turn right. Go 5.2 miles and look for the parking area for the Lone Star Trail on your right. If you get to Montague Church, you’ve gone too far. Park your car here. This is Parking Lot #15 - Winters Bayou.

To the box:
From the hiker’s gate at the parking area, start walking on the trail. Before long you will encounter 2 footbridges. At about 4/10ths of a mile you will walk through a clearing under high-line wires, then another foot bridge. At about 6/10ths of a mile you will come to a large iron bridge that crosses Winters Bayou. This is a quiet, lovely spot, so stop and listen to the birds singing. Cross to the far side of the bridge, stop, and look down to your left at an old bulkhead. Go down beside the bridge and look under it. The box is tucked into a corner of the support beam under the bridge. Please replace as found. As usual, take appropriate precautions.
