Kernville, closest city, but box is in Tulare County
Not stroller friendly, but dogs OK. Closest restrooms: Brush Creek just before Johnsondale Bridge. Closest eats at Mc Nallys or get picnic fixings at James Store/Deli in Kernville. There are 10 + letterboxes along the way, plus 6 more in high country.
We planted this box during a family picnic on Mother’s Day in a lovely little meadow with a creek running along the backside. Dogs, kids and big folk had a nice day!
From Primo’s big white chicken in Kernville take Sierra Highway 29.6 miles up river. Enjoy the drive and hunt up some other boxes along the way.
At 10.4 miles from box location you will drive over Johnsondale Bridge. Continue past South Fork Falls.
At 6.3 miles from box you will pass R Ranch on your left.
At 5.7 miles from box you will pass Lloyd Meadows Road on your right. Go left at the intersection staying on main road. There is a sign pointing to the left for the ‘Trail of 100 Giants’, and you will be going left.
At 2.4 miles from box you will pass a sign for Pack Saddle Meadow, Thompson Camp and Portuguese Pass. Don’t take that road. Check your odometer. From the last sign noted at the 2.4 mileage, turn left into a turnout and faint dirt road and veer left driving among trees about 100 feet towards the back of the meadow that you were able to see from the main road. Park and smell the fresh air. Work your way left (just a bit of a walk) to the back of the meadow and note the huge fallen tree that spans the creek.
From the fallen tree walk along the small creek 35 girly paces down stream (left). This should put you in front of a VW size rock formation with multiple vertical splits. Several trees and some brush are growing out of the splits. Cross the creek and approach rock formation and look low in front and to the left for the box behind a rock pile tucked inside one of the slits. We did not see Poison Oak but watch out in case is growing near and please hide box better than you found it, bracing it with rocks so it won’t slide out due to rain/snow.
