Spud Island

***Box was found alive and well as of 17 Nov 09!!!***

This box was planted as our contribution to the expanding list of letterboxes here on Canada’s smallest province! Prince Edward Island has long been famous for its agricultural products, and in particular, potatoes! This has naturally led to several nicknames, not the least of which is Spud Island! If you ever get the chance, visit O’Leary, and the PEI Potato Museum (RTRW has a LB there!) Canadian recording artist Stompin’ Tom Connors recorded “Bud the Spud”

It's Bud the Spud from the bright red mud
Goin down the Hiway smiling-
The Spuds are big on the back of Bud's rig
And they're from Prince Edward Island,
They're from Prince Edward Island

To the box:

From the Trans Canada Hwy look for UPEI. Turn left on Belvedere. Find and park in the Agriculture Canada Farmers Market parking lot. Look for the white fencing in the right hand corner. This is where you’ll pick up the trail, which is actually an old railroad right of way. Follow the path to the right. Soon you’ll pass a covered picnic table. Continue on, watching the right-side embankment until you find a curious structure built out of old railroad ties. This is actually an old maintenance car turn-out! What you seek is hidden on the east side of this structure, under a fairly large stone and several smaller ones.

Bring your own pen and ink!

Have fun, eh?
