Degree of Difficulty – easy.
Distance – about 1/8 mile round trip.
Est. Time – about 1/2 hour.

Terrain – generally flat with some pavement, and one small ditch to cross.

Accessibility – Ok, except for the ditch. Best have another set of hands for this one!

Westray was an underground coal mine near New Glasgow, NS, that, when built in 1991, was heralded as one of the most modern in the world.

Tragically, on 9 May, 1992, an explosion ripped through the mine, killing all 26 men working the shaft. The subsequent investigation revealed that the mines owners were very aware of the potential for explosions, given the nature of the coal seams in the area, and the previous history of tragedies in other local mines over the years. Despite this, the mine’s owners chose not to spend the large amount of money required to “gas-proof” the mine. This revelation ultimately led to permanent closure and the company’s bankruptcy.

A Memorial Park was built, spearheaded by the Miners Union, and several concerned civic and business groups. Please take the time to enjoy the surroundings.

To the box: The Park is located just off Trans Canada Hwy 104 in New Glasgow, NS. Take exit 25 North. Head north on Rte 348 for .5 km (.3 mi). turn right at the lights onto Park Street (by St Gregory’s Church) and travel approximately .6 km (.4 mi) to the Park. Look for the lantern symbol. Park in front of the Memorial Archway with the sidewalk leading to the actual Memorial. After pausing at the Memorial, find the flag pole. Take a bearing of 000 degrees and then follow this heading for 68 steps. The box is hidden at the base of a large beech tree (white barked) with 2 smaller beech trees directly behind it.

Please bring your own pen and ink, and rehide well.
