The Rock Garden Letterbox is located in Paugnut State Forest, in Torrington Ct, off of the John Muir Trail. Five Paws and I planted this box. The directions are the same as the ones for The Curious Grove. Find your way to Winsted Rd from Rt 8. It is the Winsted Rd exit from one direction and the Kennedy Drive exit from the other. Head south on Winsted Rd, past Big Y and Burger King, almost a mile to Newfield Rd on your right. There is a large church and a day care center on the same corner. Follow Newfield Rd about 1/2 mile to Guerdat Rd on the right. There are also signs for the Elk's Pond. Follow this for about a mile, to the fork in the road. Take a right, past 3 houses. Please respect the residents. There are children, dogs, and horses in the area. Follow the road to where it changes to dirt, and park at the intersection of the three roads. From here, hike down the left hand road, and look for the John Muir trail, marked in blue, about a 1/2 mile down. Head west over the stone wall. Very soon you will come to another stone wall. Just past it you will see a blue marker on a tree, and a white arrow pointing north. Follow the arrow, on the other side of the wall, and you will see blue and white trail blazes. Follow these a short way and the trail will take you to a wonderful rocky ledge. The blue and white trail goes below the ledges, but look for a white blaze to the left up amongst the rocks. Be aware that the trail is above you, and although this is not a highly traveled area, you can be seen. You will be standing between the rocky ledge to your left, and a short man made looking wall on your right. Look under the depression in the wall, and you will find The Rock Garden. When you have stamped in, and carefully replaced the box, you can continue down the blue and white trail. Very soon it reconnects with the blue trail, and you can turn left to return to your car, or turn right to continue on to The Curious Grove. This is a very easy and short hike. Have a wonderful time!
