Hiking time: 30-40 minutes
Difficulty: Moderate, uphill
Special needs: boots, during rainy season
Optional: your bike

Directions:
From I 271 take the Wilson Mills Exit. Turn east, cross Rte. 91 (SOM Center Rd.) at the light and continue east until you reach a Cleveland Metroparks sign just before the stop sign. Turn left into the Wilson Mills Trail Head parking lot.

Clues:
Check out the map if you wish, then begin hiking (or biking)up the paved all-purpose trail, twisting and turning with Buttermilk Creek bubbling along on your left. After about 5-10 minutes you will come to a “traffic circle”; turn to the right at this point and continue up the paved road for a bit. Be watching on your right for a round iron man-hole cover with the words THE MADISON FDRY COMPANY, CLEVELAND, OHIO on it. I've been told there are 2 of them, so I guess I should say the 2nd manhole cover... At any rate, there is a 2' wooden post behind the one you want; step off the road and walk up to this short post. Looking to the right, you will see a very tall stump. Walk up to it, then continue straight ahead to the humongous oak tree with a cleft about 30 feet up where it Y’s off into 2 wide branches. Around to the back of this tree there is an appendage that looks kind of like an elephant’s foot, with a large branch that has fallen on it. The letterbox is hidden in the recess just behind this “foot”, under some large pieces of bark. (Be sure to replace the bark when you’re done.)

To return to your car, retrace your journey if you rode your bike. It will be much more pleasant than the uphill trip to the box!

But if hiking is part of your reason for embarking on this quest (AND if you'd like to hunt for the Chat Blanc Letterbox), then here is an alternate return route: Return to the paved road and continue in the same direction you were going (right) until you see a dirt path on your right. Soon it will come to a T; turn to the right and follow the wide Buckeye/bridle trail up, then downhill for about 15-20 minutes. After the steepest descent of all, you will have the choice of crossing the stepping stones and rejoining the paved all-purpose trail or continuing on the dirt Buckeye Trail back to the parking lot.
