Clues

Difficulty: Clues and walk easy
Walking time: about 10 minutes one way
Stamp hand-carved
Status: alive and well on October 5, 2007

Take Highway 80 to Rodeo (which is actually in New Mexico). Turn northeast on the road to Portal. Continue on the road past the community of Portal to the USFS Ranger Station / Visitor Center on the right side of the road. Continue past the Ranger Station for about 0.2 mile more to a trailhead parking area on the right side of the road. There is a large brown sign there titled “Recreation Area” with a map of the area on it.

Walk on the left trail which goes southwest. Walk to a bench which is on the right and a little up slope from the trail. From the northeast end of the bench, go at about 190 degrees (from mag. north) for about 21 steps to a about 6 ½ ft. tall snag which is just before a live Oak Tree. From the snag, go up slope at about 306 degrees (from mag. north) for about 26 steps to a moderate size pinkish boulder covered with yellow lichen and just behind an Oak Tree. The box is under the northeast side of the boulder behind a rock and plant debris. Be alert for snakes.

Please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag). Please rehide the box well under the rocks, twigs and plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.

The next person that finds this box will find a surprise.

This is a premier area for birding.

This box was placed on National Letterboxing Day – May 24.

I will not be able to check on this box very often; so, please let me know if you find it. Also, let me know if it is missing so that I can delete the clues:
