Unexpected Animals #3 & #4 – Swimmin’ Hole

Kenneydell Park
6745 Fairview Rd SW, Tumwater
From I-5 take Tumwater Blvd. If you’re northbound turn left on Tumwater Blvd. If you’re southbound turn right. Turn right on Littlerock Rd and left on 70th/Israel. At the end it will turn right and become Kirsop Rd SW. Turn left on 66th. This will turn left and become Fairview Rd SW, taking you to the park. The park is on both sides of the road. Enter the park by the sign on the right side of the road.
Hours 9:00 am – dusk
No lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk.

Park near the lodge
This park used to be a Girl Scout camp. The Girl Scouts sold it to the county in the 1980’s. Some of the local Girl Scouts still mourn but we’re glad it has become a public park for all to enjoy! Walk up to the lodge and close your eyes. If you listen closely you can still hear the sound of youthful voices singing around a campfire! But that’s not why we’re here today…

Box #3

We may have a lot of rain in WA, which doesn’t make for such good swimming weather, but there are a lot of things we can be thankful that we don’t have here! To find your first unexpected animal stand on the concrete steps of the lodge and find the trail at 145*. Take that trail over the bridge and up the hill. Look for a stump that was left by the loggers of long ago. You’ll know you’ve found the right stump because it’s just to the left of the trail and there’s a springboard step facing you as you walk up.

Look around the back of the stump on the right. About 4’ up you’ll find your animal behind some strategically placed bark. Don’t worry. He’s friendly. =) This box won’t last long unless you carefully conceal him again with the bark when you’re done!

Box #4

A sighting of this animal may not be unexpected in Washington State, but it is definitely unexpected in Black Lake! I wonder how he got here. I hear the fishing is pretty good in this lake. Maybe that’s why he’s here. Who knows? Let’s hope he stays around a long time!

•If you want to see him yourself, head back to the lodge.
•When you get to the asphalt go left past the path to the Pioneer Shelter until you find the 5 large boulders.
•Go between them and to the right of the tree.
•Go straight (well really it’s a slight left) at the intersection.
•At the fence turn right
•At the T turn left
•Go past the “chair” and the double, no quadruple firs.
•This will take you to the waterfront. I hope you brought your swimsuit! Here’s your chance to go in for a dip.
•When you’re done swimming follow the asphalt up the hill past the biffy (That’s Girl Scout-eze for Bathroom In the Forest For You!)
•Take the trail just past the tables
•At the intersection go straight
•Look for a 4’ high stump on the left. It’s just past a huge tree.
•Behind that stump is a much smaller stump.
•Behind that, under a pile of bark and forest debris you’ll find our unexpected friend.
