This is the beginning of a series of letterboxes placed on the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus. Additional letterboxes will be placed every so often, so keep checking! For information about UCLA and maps of the campus, go to www.ucla.edu. Daily parking permits can be purchased for $8 at any parking kiosk on campus. Meter parking is also available at a rate of $0.25 per 8 min. You can also search for free off-campus street parking in the neighborhoods bordering campus.

NORTH CAMPUS LETTERBOX: Alive & well as of 11/6/08.

Melnitz Hall houses the James Bridges Theater, the main screening venue for the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Begin at the main entrance of Melnitz Hall, located in front of a black sculptured wall called Grande Cretto Nero (Alberto Burri, 1977). Walk south a short distance toward the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden. On your left, you'll see a walkway separating Melnitz from Macgowan Hall. The path leads down some stairs to a row of vending machines. Before heading down the stairs, look to your right and you'll find parallel to the sidewalk a brick wall (with the words "MACGOWAN HALL") and a metal gate connecting the wall to the side of the building. Look where the bottom horizontal bar of the gate meets the brick, and you'll find the North Campus letterbox. You may have to push aside the juniper branch to access it. Lots of students, faculty, and visitors wander about here... be as quick and stealthy as possible!! Take the box to the sculpture garden to stamp in. Then enjoy the garden, which has been named one of the most distinguished outdoor sculpture gardens in the country.

BOTANICAL GARDENS LETTERBOX: Alive and well as of 11/14/08.

The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden is located on the southeastern corner of the UCLA campus. Boasting over 5,000 plant species, the 7-acre garden is also home to squirrels, hummingbirds, butterflies and other animals. There are 2 shady picnic tables near a pond with turtles and koi -- a great place for an afternoon lunch! For more information, go to http://www.botgard.ucla.edu. You'll find the Botanical Garden LB near one of the 3 entrances to the garden, attached magnetically to the back of a small metal plaque. Be sure to REHIDE THE BOX IN THE SAME PLACE (on the plaque, as low to the ground without being visible) to prevent its removal by meticulous gardeners! Please keep in mind that the box will be difficult to rehide around closing time, when people are exiting the gates. (The garden is open 8 am to 5 pm weekdays, and from 8 am to 4 pm on weekends; closed on University holidays. Admission is free.)

ATHLETICS LETTERBOX: Reported missing as of 5/23/07.

The UCLA Bruins lead the nation with 99 NCAA team championships and 120 total national championships. UCLA has also had at least 1 competitor in every Summer Olympics since 1924 (except for the boycott in 1980), with 57 athletes and coaches attending the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In late fall, Bruin football fans rally against their main rivals, the USC Trojans, in a week-long "Beat 'SC" extravaganza, complete with a bonfire, a car smashing, and a Westwood Village parade featuring marching groups and student-made floats. You can witness these events if you plan your trip during the week of the UCLA vs. USC football game. For tickets and information for all events, visit uclabruins.cstv.com. (If you're on a budget or interested in checking out some regular season home events for free, check the schedules for the following sports: Men's/Women's Tennis, Men's/Women's Water Polo, Men's/Women's Golf, and Women's Swimming, Diving, Cross Country, and Rowing.)

The UCLA Bruin Hall of Fame is located in the Athletics building (JD Morgan Center), not far from the Bruin Bear statue in the heart of campus. The Athletics Letterbox can be found on the ramp leading down to the main entrance of the building. Look for the black microbox at the base of the third post from the bottom of the ramp, in the handrail closest to the wall. You can stamp in at the big steps at the bottom of the ramp. Make sure no one's watching before you rehide the box (keep an eye on the receptionist inside the Athletics building!). Before you leave, don't forget to walk over to the bear statue and take your picture with Joe Bruin, the UCLA mascot! (The mascot may be "in hibernation" during the UCLA vs. USC football game, to prevent its vandalism by Trojan rivals.) This is a great place on campus to witness everyday student life. You can also purchase souvenirs at the UCLA Student Store in Ackerman Union, across from the Morgan Center.

BENT LETTERBOX: Alive & well as of 7/17/08.

Standing in front of the main entrance to Boelter Hall, the headquarters of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, you'll notice a small geometric sculpture camouflaged into the greenery at the base of the staircase. This bronze object, known as the Bent, is nearly a figure of worship to members of the engineering fraternity Tau Beta Pi. According to the website of the UCLA chapter, initiation into this 121-year-old honor society requires the following tasks: taking a 15-question short answer quiz on Tau Beta Pi; holding two weekly tutoring sessions; obtaining the signatures of 10 candidates, 10 officers, 2 non-officers, 2 faculty members and displaying them creatively (ie, not on stapled notebook paper); submitting 3 graded class exams to the chapter's database; paying a $95 membership fee ... AND devoting 30 minutes to polishing the Bent! (I myself have witnessed the Bent Polish during the planting of my letterboxes... and this is how I came to learn about this organization!) For more fun facts about Tau Beta Pi, go to www.tbp.seas.ucla.edu.

Since the Tau Beta Pi engineers have to jump through so many hoops, so should anyone who wants the Bent LB stamp! To gain access to the Bent Letterbox, you'll first have to take this 10-question pop-quiz.

Q1. Solve for x in the following equation: 5x - 4 = 16.
Q2. What is the 20th digit of the irrational number pi?
Q3. Each of 3 light switches can be in the on or off position. How many configurations are possible? (Ex: on-off-off)
Q4. Evaluate tan (pi/4).
Q5. What's the next number in this sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, ...?
Q6. What is the smallest prime number?
Q7. There are 4 brown socks and 6 black socks in a drawer. The room is dark with no windows or lights. How many socks do you need to grab to make sure you have a matching pair?
Q8. How many different meals can be made from 4 kinds of meat, 4 vegetables, and 2 salads if a meal consists of one selection from each group?
Q9. Divide the number of degrees in a circle by the number of sides in a regular decagon. Take half of this number.
Q10. What is the derivative of 8x?

If you want to verify your answers before heading out for the box, contact me via LBNA or Atlasquest. This box can only be accessed from 8 am to 5 pm weekdays, excluding University holidays.

From the Bent, go up the main staircase and enter Boelter Hall. Walk to your left. You'll see a stairwell and an elevator on your right. (This building is a labyrinth, so make sure you remember the way out!) Go to floor (Q1), and look for room (Q2)(Q3)(Q4)(Q5). QUIETLY open the door to the RIGHT of this room. If you're not traveling solo, allow only 1 person to enter the room and get the box. Everyone else should wait outside the room. Keep your voices down but act casually, because any non-engineer will look suspicious! Inside the room, you'll see lockers on the left and right walls. Look for locker (Q6)(Q7) on the left wall. The Bent Letterbox is inside this locker. To get to it, use the combination (Q8)(Q9)(Q10). (In case you're not sure how these locks work: spin the lock a few times clockwise and stop on (Q8); spin exactly once counterclockwise and stop on (Q9); then half-spin clockwise to (Q10) and pull down.)

The Bent Letterbox is the biggest letterbox in Ipako history -- very hitchhiker friendly! It's also guaranteed to last, since access is only available to letterboxers. Stamp in quickly and return the box quietly. Before you go, make sure the lock is LOCKED on the CORRECT locker...! Please let me know if this box needs maintenance.
