Terrain: mostly level, crushed limestone path, children require close supervision
Distance: 1.2 mile loop
Confirmed in place: 6/12/2022
Door County is full of surprises and you’ll find a couple of them in the county park in Ellison Bay. Enjoy the view from the scenic overlook and the surprising catwalk, if you’re comfortable with heights. Afterwards, take the path near the park marker.
This park is filled with wildflowers. If you visit in the spring, you may see trillium, lady slippers, forget-me-nots, and many more. As you hike, notice the different types of trees. Do you hear any woodpeckers? We stopped to watch one near the path on the day we scouted this location.
Under an over-arching branch from a white pine, look at 300° to where a western red cedar tree supports the large old birch snag that holds another surprise for those new to Door County.
If you reach a definite dirt trail on the right, you have traveled too far.
Please stamp in discreetly and carefully replace the letterbox hidden from view. We recommend continuing along the path, which will loop back to the overlook.
Our visits are very few and far between, so please use the Contact the Placer link to give us a status update after your visit. If the letterbox is damaged, please contact us to arrange for its return. If you are a local letterboxer willing to help care for this box, please contact us.
