Walnut Point State Park offers many nature trails and Woodpecker Nature Trail is one of the nicest. The Trail is very short (1/2 mile), paved and handicap accessible. This is a self-guided trail, with guidebooks near the entrance.
Once you arrive at the trailhead and get a guide, you’ll learn the Trail is devoted to highlighting various species of trees found in the Park. Take a short stroll with me and enjoy the forest. If you watch, you may even see a few Woodpeckers working away.
Each variety of tree is identified with a sign referencing it’s number in the guide book, which tells you something about the tree. You’ll want to pay special attention to the tree that has leaves up to 10 inches long & 6 inches wide, lobed with bristle tips on each lobe. It’s upper surface is dark green, dull & smooth, while the lower surface is a paler green. This tree is usually found throughout the rich, upland woods of Illinois.
This is a small box, barely large enough for the stamp and journal, so bring your own pen and stamp pad. Please be sure to cover the box & leave it the way you found it so others can enjoy the discovery.
