Along with the many “identified” hiking trails at Walnut Point State Park, there are also some “unmarked” trails leading you to places unknown. While attempting to locate one trail we stumbled across this one.

As you enter the park, follow the road around to the Gray Squirrel Campground. There is only one way in and one way out. Park in the designated lot, then continue on around the bend. Between sites 27 & 29 there is a path that can be seen from the road. Follow this trail, angling left. About ½ way you’ll see a large, hollow tree stump on your right. Continue on, listening to the sounds of nature & keep an eye out – you may see a stray turtle scurrying away toward the water, or even some sunning out on the fallen trees across the water.

A little further on there will be a boat dock to your right. Follow the path down to the point across from Shady Bay and the Walnut Point Café. As you sit down to view the activities or scenery around the lake, reach down and under the back, right corner of the platform, here you will find our treasure.

You won’t need to dig, but you may have to get down on your hands and knees to find it. Bring your own stamp pad and pen for signing into the journal. Please be discreet in replanting the box as you may be seen by the local fishermen.

Happy Hunting!
