The Teacher of Wisdom Letterbox
We use a Compass to find our way when we are not sure of the True direction we should be traveling in. The Teacher of Wisdom can be physically spun around, & she can correctly tell you which way is North! And if something is troubling you & you are not sure which way to turn, The Teacher will help you see which way you might want to proceed.
The Teacher has Much knowledge to share, whether about people, or plants, or planted letterboxes, yet she still knows how to have fun! Give her a good hill & some snow & a sled, (even if it’s just a cardboard box), & off she goes whooping & hollering, reminding us you are never too old to let your inner kid play.
So this box is dedicated to my Very Dear Friend Butterfly, the Best Teacher I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
Thanks Nancy!
Your Little Crone Friend, Lobsta Lady
This letterbox is located in the Salt Meadow Unit of Connecticut’s Stuart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge in Westbrook. This gift from Lobsta Lady to Butterfly was planted July 4th 2004 by both of them.
Directions: Exit 64 off I-95, head South on 145 (Horse Hill Rd.), and turn Left on to Old Clinton Road. The Refuge parking lot is on the right, about a mile.
Clues: Park and walk up the park road a short way. Pass by the large Welcome sign on your Right, and a split rail fence. Find the stone table and 2 stone benches. The loop trail will bring you back to this interesting spot.
Stand at the SE corner of the table, & take a bearing of 220 degrees, and go about 30 steps, this will bring you to the beginning of this trail. Now head down the trail at 170 degrees into a meadow, and stay on this trail as it enters the woods. Nice rocks & stone walls along the way. As you travel along, notice the rail road tracks on the left.
Beyond on your Left, you will notice a four sister oak, a small trail, and one of the lovely wooden benches gifted in memory of Douglas M. Pierpoint Jr. Continue on the main trail, and soon you will pass through a stone wall. Stop and count 30 steps, and look low in the wall for a large stone with big blotches of lichen on it, and notice a trap door at its SW end. What you seek is here.
Continue on the loop to return to your starting location & the interesting buildings.
