Trail Hazard?

Great Seal State Park
Rocky knob ‘mountain’.

This stamp could represent some trail hazards that may be present in this area.

Following the same basic parking directions as my other box Pop Art.

Look up the PDF map of the park here: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/pdf/greatseal604.pdf

Follow Rocky Road until you find the Grouse Rock trail head located across the road from the park service area.

Do not be fooled by the illustration, the trails running through the area that are not to scale of the map. I noticed that this trail appears to be newer, they have recently cut through several downed logs this year that have been on the ground for many years. I still haven’t found the original Grouse Rock Trail.

After beginning the climb locate the fresh trail that splits off to the left from the main trail that is a few paces from a large rock. There will be a small rock at the base of a tree to mark the correct turn off. Bicyclists have started a fresh Y split shortcut around some trees here.

After a short walk, you will walk out onto the cleared electric line right of way.

The trail will switch back close to the other side of the clearing.

Follow this trail for awhile as it hugs the hill contour in the same direction as the trail in “Pop Art” only this trail is higher up on the hillside.

You will notice an old roadway leading off to the left upward and to an angle behind you. (You could possibly continue on the trail as I think it curves back around to a point mentioned next). Walk up the old roadway.

There was a wine bottle near the base of a tree here.

This old road bed is soon crossed by a trail, follow the trail on up the hill.

This trail will come to a ‘T’ intersection, the Tower buildings will be to the left.

Turn right and continue walking the spine of this hill, “Rocky Knob”.

There will be some brown plastic trail posts along the various trail offshoots.

You will go to the left on trail ‘36’ and ignore ‘28’. The letters are molded into the plastic and are the same color as the post.

A few steps past this marker on the left, you will find one of several stacked rock cairns up here.

About 85 paces past the end of the first rock pile will bring you to sign post #15.

2 steps at 90* will bring you to a rock pile within a rock pile.

Look for the flat rock with the most obvious imbedded fragments nearest the trail, the box is under this pile. Poke the area with a stick first. Good place for Copperheads?

There are some interesting odd rocks here, some Iron colored stones with imbedded particles.

Re-hide this box well, it’s very close to the trail.

I returned back this trail but I continued onward to the tower buildings looking for the entrance. The path becomes gravel at a point and I met 4 mountain bikers on this stretch.

Instead of returning down the trail, I just walked over the steep part and followed the clear-cut electric line path down to the switchback mentioned before.

An easy alternative would be to park near the gates to the towers and walk the gravel road some distance past the towers onward along the spine of this hill right up to the last sign post 15.
