7/8/07 UPDATE - I got a message that the railroad tie is infested with hornets. Will try to do first aid/move it in the fall.

*********************************************************

The Tilman Bishop State Wildlife Area is a 105 acre property along the Colorado River in Palisade. It was named for a former state Senator, Tillie Bishop. The area is used for wildlife viewing as well as limited hunting and fishing. A state habitat stamp is required to access the wildlife area, but the letterbox is planted outside the fee area. After climbing dry, rocky slopes to find letterboxes on the north side of I-70, you'll find this fertile, green area to be a refreshing change.

To get to the Tilman Bishop State Wildlife Area, head south on 38 Road from Highway 6 in Palisade. Pass Talbot’s Mountain Gold on the left side of the road. 38 Road turns into 37 ¼ Road and you will see a brown information sign when it intersects with F ¼ Road, directing you to the State Wildlife Area. After you cross the bridge over the Farmer’s Canal, take the first right. There will be a 10 MPH speed limit sign. Follow the canal a short distance until you arrive at the information kiosk for the viewing area.

Park near the kiosk and read about the park and regulations. You should see an orange fence post on the left side of the kiosk. Between the third and fourth green fence posts to the left of the orange one, there is a rail road tie. Look under the south end of the tie, under rocks. Kick your boot-y at the beautiful views of this lush green oasis on the western slope.

Hand carved stamp and hand made journal. A first finders certificate awaits. No ink in the box, bring your own (pink or violet is preferred).

Please rehide well and take the usual precautions when reaching into dark areas. If you hear "gunshots" every 1-2 minutes, don't be alarmed. These are noises made to keep the birds away from the vineyards.

Additional information - The letterbox is OUTSIDE the viewing area, but if you wish to explore inside the viewing area, the state habitat stamp costs five dollars and can be purchased at any Division of Wildlife office. The funds raised through the sale of the stamp are used to protect wildlife habitat in Colorado. Dogs are not allowed inside the viewing area except as an aid to hunting. Entrance into the viewing area is prohibited during the spring nesting and migration period, March 15th through July 14th.
