THIRD ANNUAL TRAILS DAY HIKE BOXES

Placed in Killingworth, CT on June 3, 2006.

These 2 boxes are hidden along our Killingworth Land Conservation Trust's Hammonasset River Trail. The walk is about .8 mile one way, and follows the river upstream through a woodsy area - past a pond, vernal pool, stream crossings and small climbs. It will have wet spots after a rainy period.

Directions: The trail opening in just south of #21 Bar Gate Trail, near the 15 MPH sign. Bar Gate trail connects to Chestnut Hill Road in two places, and the trail is near the southern intersection. Chestnut Hill Road is off of Route 79 (just past the blinker, about 2.3 miles north of I95, Exit 62) in Madison and the other end intersects with Route 80 in Killingworth (turn at the large green Boy Scout Reservation sign). Park along the roadside.

Enter the trail, blazed in orangish-red, through the leafy bower. Soon you will see a pond on the right - signs of beavers, but none living there at the moment. Cross a rocky seasonal streambed and soon bear right, with the Hammonasset River on your left.

After walking 5-10 minutes, you should spot a five-foot-plus stump (more tha 2-foot diameter) and larged downed tree on your right 15 steps off of the trail, look behind the tree for your first box, the Land Trust Chickadee. If you come to a wet marsh area on the right, you have gone just a little too far.

When in doubt about where the trail continues, stick close to the river, but do watch blazes. You will come to a lovely campsite area and rocky stream crossings. You will come to a substantial rocky crossing which puts you with the river on your left and a rock-filled seasonal stream area to the right. After the crossing, you will pass between 2 blazed trees. Continue 47 steps and then look for a large moss-covered rock on your right - the most rounded one in the area. Check under its “point” for box #2, Third Annual Trails Day Hike.

Continue just little further and you will meet up with the white-dot trail which takes you out to Bar Gate Trail. If you continue past the white-dot trail you can hunt for the Close to Home letterbox, and check for Camping Series #1 along the white-dot trail on your way out! The Bar Gate Trail box is close to the start of this Trails Day series.

Please enjoy and trend gently on our beloved land trust trails.
