Peace...in Malagasy
Ellington, CT

NOTE: This is a 1.2 mile scenic hike in the vacinity of Shenipsit State Forest. It is the same starting point as the "Peace...in Sami" and "Peace...in Swahili" letterboxes. The total distance for all three boxes is about 3.2 miles.

From Vernon, take route 83N into Ellington. Watch for the junction of route 140. Turn right onto route 140E. (also known as Crystal Lake Rd) Drive for 1.3 miles, then take a sharp left onto Hopkins Road. Drive up the road for 0.1 as it turns into dirt. Park in the pullover on the left side of the road. Notice the blue blazes of the Shenipsit Trail.

Carefully walk across the road. Take the blue trail NW into the forest. Walk for 7-8 minutes until you come to a large flat stone on the left. Very soon after that you will approach a 4-way intersection. Turn right onto a white blazed trail. The blazes seem splattered. Follow it for 4 or 5 minutes until you come to a blazed upright stone on the left. Continue past it for a couple of more minutes. Keep your eye open for a rocky/ledgy area on the right. The formation is about 20 feet off the trail. Standing at the white blazed tree closest to it, turn towards the southernmost stone. Look under the east side for the "Peace...in Malagasy" letterbox. NOTE: If you come to a junction with a dirt road where logging has taken place, you have gone about 100 yards too far.

Enjoy, but rehide carefully. When you are done, backtrack to the blue trail intersection. From there, either return to your car or continue your quest to find peace. Spread the word!
