Peace...in Swahili
Ellington, CT

NOTE: This is a 1 mile scenic hike in the vacinity of Shenipsit State Forest. It is the same starting point as the "Peace...in Sami" and "Peace...in Malagasi" letterboxes. The total distance for all three boxes is about 3.2 miles.

From Vernon, take route 83N into Ellington. Watch for the junction of route 140. Turn right onto route 140E. (also known as Crystal Lake Rd) Drive for 1.3 miles, then take a sharp left onto Hopkins Road. Drive up the road for 0.1 as it turns into dirt. Park in the pullover on the left side of the road. Notice the blue blazes of the Shenipsit Trail.

Carefully walk across the road. Take the blue trail NW into the forest. Walk for 7-8 minutes until you come to a large flat stone on the left. Very soon after that you will approach a 4-way intersection. Turn left onto a white blazed trail. The blazes seem splattered. Follow it downhill for a couple of minutes past a nice rock formation on the right. Watch out, the trail can be a bit mucky in places. Soon you will come to a stream. Cross it and look for a large circular flat stone on the trail. It is about 3-4 ft across. It is near a large flat boulder on the right. Stop. At 340 degrees, about 15 feet away is another stone. Go to it and look underneath. There you will find the "Peace...in Swahili" letterbox.
Enjoy, but rehide carefully. When you are done, backtrack to the blue trail intersection. From there, either return to your car or continue your quest to find peace. Spread the word!
