Peace...in Sami
Ellington, CT

NOTE: This is a 2.4 mile scenic hike in the vacinity of Shenipsit State Forest. It is the same starting point as the "Peace...in Malagasi" and "Peace...in Swahili" letterboxes. The total distance for all three boxes is about 3.2 miles.

From Vernon, take route 83N into Ellington. Watch for the junction of route 140. Turn right onto route 140E. (also known as Crystal Lake Rd) Drive for 1.3 miles, then take a sharp left onto Hopkins Road. Drive up the road for 0.1 as it turns into dirt. Park in the pullover on the left side of the road. Notice the blue blazes of the Shenipsit Trail.

Carefully walk across the road. Take the blue trail NW into the forest. Hike for 7-8 minutes until you come to a large flat stone on the left. Very soon after that you will approach a 4-way intersection. Continue north on the blue trail. Cross a stream and head uphill. At the next intersection, turn right with the blue blazes onto a logging road. Eventually you will pass evidence of logging (piles of logs). Hike past a spot where there are blue blazed tree on the right and left. About 100 yards further along you'll see a trail entering from the right. Continue on blue. After about 5-7 minutes you'll see trees marked in yellow as the trail begins to descend. At the next large intersection, stop. You'll know you are in the right spot if you see an "island" where the trails meet. Almost there! Turn right onto the wide unmarked trail. Walk a short distance until the trail begins a decent descent. (I used to get those spelling words wrong when I was a kid) Do you see a large 3-sister tree on the right? Stand by it and get your compass ready. At 227 degrees, notice a stone with nooks and crannies. Walk up to it. (about 20 steps) Look in its southeast side. Hidden behind a log is the "Peace...in Sami" letterbox. Please enjoy, then rehide carefully. Return the way you came, back to your car. While you are here, why not search for more peace in the area?
Spread the word!
