This series is located in the John Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, which is located on Route 1A in Narragansett, RI, next to the Sprague Bridge. This location is just north of Narragansett Town Beach. The Sprague Bridge spans the Narrow River where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, a popular spot for kayakers.

Warrior Woman kindly recarved all the stamps for this series. The log book is in the last box. The first 4 are in pill bottles.

Pull into the paved access road for the refuge and bear left at the Refuge sign to park in the graveled parking area. Side note: To launch your kayak, continue past the parking area to the end.

Walk back to the Refuge sign and follow the paved road into the refuge. You will soon come upon a rock wall that runs due east off the right side of the paved road. Walk just past the rock wall and turn into the field to walk parallel to the wall, which is now on your right. Continue to the tree just before the break in the rock wall. Under a pile of rocks at the base of the tree you will find:

"Del's Lemonade" - the original frozen lemonade! In the last few years, copycat frozen lemonade stands have made their debut in our fine state, but those are only for the tourists. Anyone who knows RI knows that the *only* frozen lemonade is Del's Lemonade.

Return to the main paved road and continue into the refuge. You will next come upon a path that runs northwest off the left side of the paved road. Go 32 paces down this path, under the electric poles to come upon a sewer cover on your right. At the sewer cover sight 300 degrees and see a telephone pole laying on the ground. On the right side of the pole, under leaves and twigs, you will find:

"Dunkin Donuts' Iced Coffee" - Not only is there a Dunkin Donuts in every city and town in the state, there is one on practically every corner ANYWHERE you go! Other similar coffee shops abound in RI, but most RI residents are hard core Dunkin Donuts fans. Oh, and don't insult us with the Starbucks that are now popping up everywhere!

Return to the main paved road and continue into the refuge. You will next come upon a circular paved loop. Stand in the center of the grassy area inside this paved circle and you will spy a grass path at 60 degrees. Follow this path for 30 paces and spy a faint trail to the right. Go to the knee high rock alone amidst some small trees. In the curve at the back of this rock, you will find:

"Autocrat's Coffee Milk" - Coffee Milk is actually the official state drink of RI. Always a hotly contested comparison, true Rho Dylanders prefer the more bitter Autocrat coffee syrup over the sugary competitor, Eclipse. And let's not be confused between a coffee milk and a coffee cabinet, which is an entirely different refreshment altogether.

After stamping in, now continue to the end of short this path into an open meadow area. Wander through this beautiful vista. Peeking out of the woods at 180 degrees, you will spy a large chunk of white quartz. Go to this gorgeous hunk of white quartz, and sneak into the woods just behind it. Under the lip of the last rock behind the white quartz, you will find:

"Newport Creamery's Awful Awful" - "Awful Big, Awful Good!" Newport Creamery was once a RI standard for local ice cream. There was a shop in just about every town in RI. Sadly, Newport Creamery has nearly closed up shop (it is currently undergoing a transformation into The Newport Cafe). Newport Creamery produced this incredibly thick ice cream shake called the "Awful Awful" and actually challenged customers with this concoction. If you drink THREE of these enormous and thick shakes (at one sitting), you get one free. I have never known anyone to actually accomplish this feat.

Wander back out into the meadow area and head back towards the paved road. You will notice a rock pyramid at 240 degree at the edge of the woods. Reach behind and under the rock pyramid to find:

"Brickley's Ice Cream" - For locally produced ice cream that is NOT a chain, Brickley's Ice Cream is the favorite in South County. My very favorite flavor is the ginger ice cream. I do not ordinarily eat ice cream in any way, shape, or form, but I justify my annual 2 or 3 servings of their ginger ice cream as a form of medicine, a digestive aid. Locals line up all the way outside just for a taste of the many many AWESOME flavors that Brickley's has to offer. Another locally produced ice cream shop that is OUTSTANDING is Gray's Ice Cream in Tiverton, RI - and they make ginger cabinets!

Return to the paved road and follow it back to your car. I hope you had a "refreshing" experience!

Hike length: 1-2 miles
