This letterbox is another in our series of favorite picnic places. Bring a picnic lunch along with you and you'll soon see why it's one of our favorites.

You can find the Fort Phoenix State Reservation from Route 6, in Fairhaven. Turn south on to Green St (a traffic light), which is across from the Fairhaven High School. Go south to the end to Fort Phoenix. Park in the parking lots inside the gates if they are open, or outside on the street if they are not.

This area can be crowded, particularily on beach days. Though the letterbox is not really near the beach, there could still be a number of people around playing games or picnicing on the grass.

Once you've parked, head east toward the bathrooms. You'll notice a large rock outcropping to the left of the road. Climb over (or go around) to the back side. Follow the woodline till you see a gray statue of a seal (or is it a dolphin). Continue until you see the next path heading into the woods, marked by a goo-sized oak street.

Go down this path 88 steps, or till you get to a group of large boulders on both sides of the path. In particular, the boulder to the right side of the path is marked with blue paint (looks like a dinosaur to me). Turn to the left and you should see more boulders. Head into those boulders. The letterbox is hidden in a cleft in the rocks, on the left side, down at ground level, covered by a small, flat rock.

While you're here, make sure you look for Mary Mantee's Fort Phoenix letterbox in her Seaside Series II.
