Many gracious thanks go to y-nought for a little local history and his thoughtful placement of this box.

When Spanish explorers reached the Chimney Rock area, local guides called it the Piedra Parada (Rock Parade) and the nearby river the Rio de la Piedra Parada, now the Piedra River.

One thousand years ago, Chimney Rock was home to the Ancestral Puebloans. The moon rises between the spires only once every 18 years during the lunar standstill, illustrating the depth of astronomical knowledge of these people.

Terrain: Easy.
Clues: Easy.

Directions: From Pagosa Springs, take 160 west about 17 miles to the intersection of Highways 160 and 151. Head south on 151 for 3.2 miles to the entrance to Chimney Rock Archaelogical Site. Immediately off the highway is a parking area by the entrance gate surrounded by a wooden fence.

Clues
Find a WELCOME sign beyond the fence to the north. Beyond that is a tall Ponderosa Pine tree. The letterbox is wedged between the pine and the trunk of a large juniper.

Notes:
- No inkpad in the box, make sure you bring your own.
- While you're in the area, check out the nearby Piedra River Hot Springs box.
- Please do not ask me for additional hints without offering a bribe of unpublished clues, hitchhikers, etc.
- Please email me with notes about the box: jelybean.books@comcast.net.
