We probably could have come up with some other name that was more intellectual, but two of our grandsons, Cadence and Carson are Thomas fanatics and the Choo-Choo name just seemed to fit.
Wallace, Idaho is an extremely quaint town with a heck of a lot of history. The town beckoned for a letterbox related to the old train depot, now a museum, and the railroad right of way turned into a bike/hiking trail that is part of the ‘Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes’. This hiking/biking trail runs from Plummer, Ida. To Mullan, Ida for 73 asphalt miles, and is certainly one of the gems of the Northwest.
Prior to actually searching for the letterbox there will be a need to tour the old depot, which will require a $2.00 fee, or $1.50 for seniors. Now we usually like to keep our letterboxes without any cost factor, but in this case you will get to see some great old photos, and other memorabilia. You might try to search for this letterbox without a paid visit to the depot/museum, but while that might be slightly more difficult, it is not impossible.

The museum has seasonal hours.
April: 10 am – 3 pm, Closed Sunday
May: 9 am – 5 pm, Daily
June – August: 9 am – 7 pm, Daily
September: 9 am – 5 pm, Daily
October: 10 am – 3 pm. Closed Sunday
Closes October 15th for the season.

From the intersection of Buena Vista Rd. and Canyon Ave on the east side of town drive east and continue east on Benthams Road for (#A) miles past this intersection.
Park and continue on foot heading generally east following the old RR right of way.
When you come upon a porta potty put your back to the side facing the water melody and find the entrance to a span at (#B) degrees.
From that entrance go to the other end at (#C) degrees.
From that end count (#D) vertical uprights in the direction of (#E) degrees and if you are directly in the middle, from a side-to-side position the letterbox will be directly below your feet.
Obviously you will have to retrace some of your steps and do a bit of scrambling and crawling, but what the heck you have already invested big bucks. Once you are in the right spot the box will eventually be above your head slightly and behind a few movable rocks.

#A. “At Work on the Railroad” an upstairs exhibit has a number written vertically. Use the first (top) number and the last (bottom) number and put a decimal between them.

#B. At the top of the stairs find the white and black sign that lists ‘capacity’ and add that number to the number you will get when adding the two numbers on the Carter Hotel key together. (Keys can be found in a display case). Remember the two numbers on the key will be added together before you add that number to the ‘capacity’ number.

#C. Deduct 1/10 of the number listed after ‘length’ in the white and black sign at the top of the stairs from the number you get for #B.

#D. Use the first two digits of the key number for the Gyde-Taylor Bldg key and add the third number down listed in the vertical number listing (#A).

#E. Use the ’Idaho no.’ listed on the White and black sign at the top of the stairs, deduct the ‘capacity’ number, then add the ‘length’, and then add the last (bottom) number in the vertical sign (#A).

When researching our clues please be aware that when previous searchers list “ATTEMPTED” on the clue sheets it may reflect more on their abilities as finders than indicate whether the box is viable or not. We do monitor our clues and boxes pretty well and appreciate the notes written to us by those that find or attempt our letterboxes.

Please contact placer directly or through the LBNA chat list regarding status rather than unofficial databases.
