Calico Ghost Town is full of stories about those who inhabited it when it was a bustling silver mining town in the late 1800's. One of my favorites is the story of Dorsey, the mail-carrying dog. When his owner was no longer able, Dorsey faithfully delivered the mail to Calico and the surrounding areas, carrying it in a modified saddle bag strapped to his back. It's said that his owner once rejected an offer of $500 for the dog, saying that he would sooner sell a grandson.

In our own time, Dorsey has been remembered in a Kenny Rogers song and a Disney movie. And no doubt you can find someone more than willing to tell you his story if you visit Calico yourself.

Once at the townsite, head to the print shop. This was the site of the post office in Dorsey's day. To the left of the shop is a wide path leading to a small stage made to look like the front of a saloon. Walk behind the stage and to your left you'll see a stack of railroad ties. Dorsey's box is hidden on the ground under the southwest corner of these ties (on the south side). If you're having trouble finding it, it's directly under a nail that sticks out of the second tie from the bottom.

Please be discreet, re-hide the box well, and have fun exploring Calico!
