Owen Park Letterbox
** THIS BOX WAS REPORTED AS LOST 6-17-11 **
Difficulty: easy
Time: ½ hour round-trip
Owen Park is located on the west side of Madison. The box is located in a greenway space adjacent to Owen Park, and not technically in the conservation area itself.
Getting there:
Owen Conservation Park is at 6021 Old Sauk Rd. on the west side of Madison.
Directions:
Start in the parking lot. At the SE side of the parking lot, there are 3 main trail heads heading into the field; you’ll take the right-most trail, which is the “outer loop”. (Note that this trail is *not* one of the ones going into the woods on the west side of the parking lot.)
At the crossroads (with a trail into the woods on the right), continue straight. At the fork, go right. The trail curves around to the left, going through a clearing.
After entering the trees, go right on the first path, then take the path to your left. You’ll follow this path quite a ways.
At the crossroads, go straight, and the path will come alongside a drainage ditch. Look to your left, and you’ll see two large decaying logs. At the far end of the larger one, tucked into the trunk behind a rock, is the box.
To get back:
You can either (1) re-trace your steps and return the way you came, or (2) when you head back on the path and hit the crossroads, take a right and follow a pathway up along the side of the Owen Park conservancy. From that pathway there are several entrances on your left that lead back into Owen Park.
