Apple Butter Festival

Berkeley Springs

The Apple Butter Festival is held annually in October. The event will next occur on October 7-8, 2006. Apple butter is made by slowly cooking apples with various spices in a large kettle over an open fire for around eight hours. The butter must be stirred constantly during this process. The hot apple butter is placed in jars for the canning process. Of course the best way to eat apple butter is to wipe up some leftovers directly from the just emptied kettle with a piece of fresh bread.

IMPORTANT: This box is on school property. Please only search for this when students are not in school! You may search after 3:30 pm, on weekends and school holidays. School is generally in session from August 26th – June 8th. The school is also usually off during Thanksgiving week and from Christmas through New Year’s Day. Please also note that it is against West Virginia Law to smoke anytime anywhere on school property!

Directions:
If coming from Martinsburg area (Rt. 9) or Hancock, MD area (Berkeley Springs is approximately 6 miles off of I-70 along US Rt. 522 South), begin your search from the Sheetz store in Berkeley Springs. This is at the junction of Rt. 522 and Rt. 9. Take Rt. 522 south towards Winchester, VA. Within a mile turn right onto Myers Road by the
W Ralph Widmyer Elementary School Sign.

If coming from Winchester take 522 North. The school will be on your left soon after passing McDonalds. This school has a track and softball field in front along 522.

Turn left at the bus garage to enter the school lot. Continue in front of the school. Continue to the far (south) end of the school parking lot near the playground equipment. You may want to check out the pavement for a brief geography lesson before proceeding.

Walk to the multi-colored playground equipment. Stand between the two red slides. Look in a southern direction (away from the school). In this direction the grass is mowed to begin a path through the woods and along the run (This is the name for a creek in Morgan County). Follow this path to the Morgan County Environmental Classroom.

From here take the orange marked trail that leads uphill. At marker number 9 the path takes a sharp right turn. Face the marker post. Look up the hill and slightly to your left. You will see a tree with six trunks. The box you seek will be between these trunks under the leaves and debris.

Go back to the trail and continue on it for a short distance. It will end in the outfield of the small baseball field on the south end of the building near where you parked.
