The Roseanne Letterbox is the first in my “Evansville’s Claim to Fame” Series.

The television show Roseanne was created, written and produced by Evansville native Matt Williams, who received his BFA in Theater from the University of Evansville. In addition to Roseanne, his television credits include writer and producer for The Cosby Show, and creator and executive producer of Home Improvement.

When it came time to film the external shots for Roseanne, Matt brought his crew back to his hometown. All outside establishing shots, including Roseanne’s famous yellow house, are Evansville landmarks.

DIRECTIONS:
(Special thanks to Earth Mother for her help in planting.)

Begin your adventure at Matt’s alma mater, the University of Evansville campus. Its main entrance is located on Lincoln Ave., east of Hwy. 41 and south of the Lloyd Expressway.

The UE campus has a horseshoe-shaped drive. You will find Shanklin Theatre at roughly 11 o’clock. Go to the stone bench nearest the box office and sit with your back to the wall. If no one is watching and you can be discreet, look over your right shoulder toward the evergreens. Check under the brush in that corner, and you should find what you are searching for.

If you want to see “Roseanne’s” house: Go west (right) onto Lincoln Avenue, and drive two blocks to Runnymeade. Take a left on Runnymeade. The first yellow house you come to on your right, number 619, is the same house you see at the beginning of each episode of Roseanne.

FYI: Also on Lincoln Avenue, bounded on one side by Runnymede and the other by Benninghof, is Memorial High School. This is where Don Mattingly, former first baseman for the New York Yankees, graduated from in 1979. Don is Number 3 in my Evansville’s Claim to Fame series.
