The University of Maine was founded in 1865, a land- grant University, and it's main campus is in Orono. There are many trails for hiking, skiing, horsebackriding and biking on UMaine property.
College can be a stressful place so first find the Counseling Cener, and turn in on the road between it and Gannett Hall. Pass the Tennis courts and the Softball field, and park in the lot on the left side.
Take the paved bike path into the woods, but immediately take the first dirt path on the right. This is Trail #3. As yoou travel up the hill. you will pass a large big building on the right. Cross a dirt access road and head down the other side of the hill, but watch for a trail on the left...called Trail 3 again. Take this left.
Continue on this part of trail 3, passing a triangle of trees and 2 large boulders by the access road. Bear right around the corner, and continue on up a slight incline til you see the intersection of Trail 5.
Take 22 paces onto Trail 5. Look left. A leaning log is touching a large gray boulder.
Search around the base of the boulder, and you will find the very first letterbox planted at UMaine!
