Peace...in Nepali!
Glastonbury, CT

NOTE: This is a 2.5 mile round trip scenic hike that passes by the Buckingham Reservoir. It is the same starting point as the "Who's the Boss" series and the "Peace...in Russian" letterbox. Though unmarked, the trails are generally easy to walk, with some moderate hills here and there. The area is open for passive recreation.

From the intersection of routes 83 and 94 in Glastonbury, drive east on rte 94 (Hebron Avenue) for 1.5 miles. Turn left at the sign for Candlewick Kennels. Take an immediate left and park in the small lot near a yellow gate. For part of today's adventure you will be hiking along a very old stretch of road called Coops Mill Road. This is a great area for snow shoeing or cross country skiing in winter.
Walk past the yellow gate and walk along the gravelly road heading north for now. After about 5 minutes of walking the road rises slightly, then curves to the right in between two small hills. A short ways beyond that you will pass a steep embankment on the left with many birch trees along side. Immediately after the embankment you may hear the roar of rushing water. What you hear is the dam of Buckingham Reservoir to the left. Continue walking on the old road for about 200 yards or so. Watch for the first wide trail to enter from the right. Turn here, following the trail at 150 degrees. The trail heads gradually uphill for a bit. Though you may notice trees marked in blue, the trail is actually blazed in faded white. (The blue is for forest management. I think trees will soon be thinned out.) After about 10 minutes on this trail keep your eyes open for a stone wall running parallel on the right. Soon a much larger and sturdier wall appears on the left. Focus your attention on this wall as you continue along. Eventually the wall turns sharply away from the trail. Walk off the trail to the corner of the wall. Take 22 steps at 2 degrees. Hidden in the wall, opposite a good sized moss covered maple tree is your prize. Be kind to the historical stonework when removing the box, you will only need to remove a couple of small rocks.

After stamping in, return to the gravel road (Coop Mill Road). Turn left and continue until you return to the yellow gate and your car. I hope you enjoyed today's adventure. Please spread the word!
