Imagine, if you will, a Louisiana farm in the spring. The lady of the farm is sitting in a rocker on the porch cutting flour sacks into pieces that will, after weeks or even months of hand sewing, become a quilt. She looks at the big Magnolia tree in the front yard and notices that it is beginning to bloom. In her mind she conceives the pattern that is known as Magnolia Bud and cuts the fabric into those shapes. The Magnolia is, after all, the state flower of Louisiana. I love to walk in the forest and come upon a Magnolia tree, or a grove of them. The large dark green, leathery leaves not only look cool but provide a cool shade. When the tree is budding, it must be spring, my favorite time of year. In the summertime, the large white flowers are magnificent. I’m sure the quilter who designed this block was thinking similar thoughts.

Directions:
This letterbox is located at Big Creek Scenic area between Shepherd and Coldspring. From Shepherd on US 59, turn west onto SH 150 toward Coldspring and go 5 miles to USF 217. From Coldspring, go east from the courthouse on SH 150 5 miles to USF 217. Go south on USF 217 2 miles to the Big Creek Scenic Area parking lot on the right.

Clues:
From the parking area, walk across the bridge and follow the trail about 100 yards to the Lone Star Trail junction with a trail map sign. Go left on the Lone Star Trail about 300 yards to a bench on the right side of the trail. Look ahead about 10 steps to a rustic log bench on the left side of the trail. This bench is shaded by a large Magnolia tree. The box is at the back of and at the base of this tree, covered with forest litter. If you’re here the right time of the year, look for a Magnolia bud. If you’re here in the summertime, spray with Off!
