Drive-by Microbox

The Bonneville Speedway is at the end of a paved road that goes about 5 miles out onto the Bonneville Salt Flats, and just dead-ends - no buildings or other permanent structures other than a sign, and a single line of orange cones heading northeast out into the salt flats.

The salt flats were first used for motor sports in 1912, but didn't become truly popular until the 1930s when the Ab Jenkins and Sir Malcolm Campbell competed against each other to set the land speed record.

The speedway is marked out by the Utah State Highway Department at the start of each summer. Usually two tracks are prepared; a 10 mile long straightway for speed trials and an oval or circular track for distance runs, which is typically between 10 and 12 miles (16 and 19 km) long depending on the condition of the salt surface. In recent years, there has also been a 5 mile (8 km) long straightway for qualifying slower vehicles.

DIRECTIONS: From I-80 take exit 4 towards the Bonneville Speedway and Salt Flats Recreation Area. Go on past the gas station, then stop at the first left (Leppy Pass Rd.), at the curve in the road. There is a big dirt pull-out area and 2 signs: TL Bar Ranch, and one with mileage to Pilot Mtns., Silver Island Mtns. & Bonneville Salt Flats. Park here.

CLUES: Behind these signs is a ditch with a bush on the bank, about 8 steps southwest from the ranch sing pole. The microboxis under the half buried rock. Please hide well and scatter dirt back over it to look natural.
