Spitler Woods is a Illinois Department of Natural Resources Park, so it is extremely well maintained. This is a great spot for families to have a day out. The park has multiple picnic and play gym spots. There is a soccer field, sand volleyball area, horseshoe pits, and miles of excellent trails. Spitler Park is located at 705 Spitler Park Dr. in Mt. Zion, Illinois (approximately 5 miles outside of Decatur). For better directions to the park from your area call the parks office at 864-3121.
Our adventure begins on the Red Oak Ramble nature trail. It begins right by the IDNR office. Cross the first bridge and walk by Pierce Park picnic area. Enter into the forest area. Cross the second bridge. Turn right onto Squirrel Creek trail/Red Oak Ramble. Stay on the Squirrel Creek Trail. Follow this to the third bridge. Stop on the first plank of the bridge. Turn around facing the way that you came. Take 30 paces and look to your right. Look for a cluster of trees and go to it. In the felled tree is the treasure.
Our box is an easy level. Maybe a quarter mile out on the trails, but please enjoy the rest of the trails while your out in Spitler.
