Finding Nemo Letter Box Series (8)
Atkins Reservoir – Shutesbury, Mass.
Time: Approximately 1 hour
Terrain: Easy

FROM SPRINGFIELD - Take 91 North. Take the RT-9 exit – exit number 19 toward NORTHAMPTON/AMHERST. Turn right at the end of the ramp, go over the Coolidge Bridge and continue on Route 9. Turn left at the lights in the center of Amherst. Go through 3 sets of traffic lights (this will be East Pleasant Street) At the stop sign take a right. Take sharp left on bend and go over railroad tracks. Take first road on right (Market Hill Road). Follow this approximately 2 miles, pass the reservoir, the dike is on the end on your left.

From Greenfield, MA: - Stay straight on I-91 South. Take the US-5/Rt 10 exit – exit number 24 toward Whately/Deerfield. Turn left onto MA-10/US-5. Turn RIGHT onto Sunderland Rd/MA-116. Continue to follow MA-116 until you get to the light at Pine Street – turn left here. Go through the lights in the center of No. Amherst and continue on. Take sharp left on bend and go over railroad tracks. Take first road on right (Market Hill Road). Follow this approximately 2 miles, pass the reservoir, the dike is on the end on your left.

Park along the edge of the road near the dike. Cross the dike. When you get to where the two paths meet, go right along a canal of water leading into the reservoir. You’ll see a plank – cross here. Turn to your right after you cross the plank. You will see a mound on your left. Behind this mound, at the base of an old learning white birch tree, you will find Bubbles.

Turn back where you came from and continue on the heavier traveled path. You will pass through an area with several small white pines on either side. To your right look for a boulder – behind the rock you will find your next Anchor the Hammerhead.

Back on the path, continue in the direction you were heading. Take the path that goes off to your left, you’ll see an inlet there on your left as well. (If you look just past this path, you should see a big pine with a white dot marking.) Go out on the jetty until you see a pine tree with a lot of low new needle growth. Turn left, go to the base of last scrubby pine and find Sheldon under a rock near the waters edge – turn back the way you came, bear left at next fork follow the water line.

Keep going, you’ll pass a nice sitting rock on your left. Take the higher of the two paths after a short distance take the left off Y. Another path stay near waters edge. Go to the backside of a large turned up tree. About six feet up, on the right, pull stuffing to find Bruce the shark hidden here. NOTE: 7/1/08 - Bruce is missing! Am planning to recarve and rehide. But keep following on for the other stamps.

Back on the path you just came from, go in the direction you just came from and take path to left through 2 trees marked with red dots, to your left you should see a dead tree standing just a short distance off the path. Go to this tree. Look for the broken off top of tree, here lies Pearl at the base.

Go back to path and continue on – when you see another path that turns off to your right – turn here. There will be another path to your right, turn here. On your left you will see two boulders under some hemlocks. The boulder on your right is a nice hiding area for Bloat the Blowfish.

Continue on – when you get to a clump of rocks on your right, before Hemlocks, and right after the turn to you took to the inlet, you will find Nemo & his dad hidden under a heavily moss covered rock.

Continue on – before you get to the plank you crossed at the beginning of your journey, you’ll see another path that goes off to your left. Walk down the path until you see a dead tree that crosses the road (the middle section has been taken away for the path to be clear). On the left side of the dead tree you will find Dory hidden under the end of the log.

Enjoy!
