As of 7/20/07 both boxes are missing.
Box #1 is relatively easy and can be don in about a 1/2 hour. Box #2 gets a bit more difficult with uphill climbs and will add another 1/2 hour or so.
Start at the Crockett Ranch Staging Area. It's off Crockett Blvd. between Cummings Skyway and Pomona St. For further details go to www.ebparks.org/parks/crockett_hills
Find the start of the trails and take Edwards Creek Trail.
Enjoy the walk and after a bit you'll go through an open area along the road. Pass through the open gate and start up the hill.
Box #1 - Happy Birthday America
There's a picnic table hiding on the right behind the roots. Stand at the end of the picnic table and face the road. At about the 7:00 position there is a big tree. Go to it and around to the other side. Look NW and up a bit more to a spot just yawning for a letterbox. Yes, it really is there. Cover it well when you're done.
Box #2 - Star Spangled Letterbox
Now go back to the trail and continue up the hill to the top. Pass through the sunny area with the dump on the left (Maybe this will be gone when you go. We can hope.) At the eucalyptus go up some more but not so steep. Eventually you'll spot the road on the left. The trail will curve to the left. Just as you curve there's a creek with a stone bank on the right. There's a V on the outside pointing to a hole where #2 is hidden beneath some rocks. Watch out for the prickers.
There's no more boxes but if you continue up the trail for a while you get some great views. When you come out of the brush and curve to the right, go a little further until you start to see a tank on the hill to the left in the distance next to a power tower. Turn around and check out the Carquinez Strait and beyond.
