Chatfield Hollow State Park
Driving:
From New Haven head East on I-95 to exit 63. Make left at light and th
en another quick left on Route 81 North. Follow 81 approximately 5 miles to the RT 81/RT 80 circle. Follow Circle 3/4 around and head west on RT 80 1 mile to park entrance on your right.
From RT 9 CT get off exit 9 and head South on RT 81. Go approximately 8 miles to RT 81/RT 80 Circle. Make your first right onto RT 80 West and proceed 1 mile to park entrance on your right.
Clues:
We parked outside the entrance and walked in on the blacktop road to the second picnic area on the right (just across the bridge with the wooden rails, there is a sign for Lookout trail on the left) there is parking here if you wish (but you will have to pay a fee in the summer months if you drive in). The trail starts behind the wooden gate on the right hand side of the picnic area, it is a gravel/dirt road to begin with. Follow the road up hill, you will cross over a stream, pass a very large boulder on your right just before the intersection with the green blazed trail also on the right, continue uphill, past this intersection on the road until you come to a second intersection, this one marked by a green blazed rock on the right and some blazed trees on the left. Turn right onto the green blazed trail and head down hill on the rock strewn path. Follow the trail across the stream (over many large boulders) and onto the mossy ledge. The trail then turns away from the ledge and stream and heads uphill on some stone stairs, just before these stairs you will see a recently fallen tree across the trail follow this tree off trail until the trunk splits into two trunks. Look left, approximately five paces away you will see a tree "eating" a lichen covered boulder, look underneath this boulder on the mossy side of the tree and you will find a trap door with the box inside. After you have stamped your stamp you may either continue on the numerous trails in the park or return the way you came.
Notes:
This is a fairly easy hike, some rock hopping is required though. I did not keep track of milage, my guess is no more than 1 1/2 miles but if this seems way off to anyone please let me know and I will update it. I highly recomend bug dope for this one, we found some ticks while hiding the box and another when we got home. Dogs are welcome in the park on leashes.
