From I-10, take Speedway west over Gates Pass to the T-junction at Kinney Road. Go right for 2.8 miles to a large pullout on the north side of the road. At the far end of the parking area, you’ll see a forked road. The left fork has a sign in the middle of it and goes downhill. Take the right fork uphill for 80 paces until you’re standing on a large yellow rock in the middle of the road. Turn toward 85* magnetic and find a stereotypical, two-armed saguaro up the hill. Make your way to that saguaro. Behind it is a cluster including a barrel cactus, palo verde, ocotillo, and a rock cairn hiding your prize.
From this hillside you can look down on the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a Tucson-area gem. It is a fun and fascinating combination of zoo, botanical garden, and natural history museum that is dedicated to the flora and fauna found in this particular region. (Behind and left of the flags are tall trees over the riparian area where the Coatimundis can be found.) It is open every day of the year and is well worth the couple of hours it takes to visit.
