This box is located in Palo Duro Canyon- see park information after clues. Camping, outdoor theatre, and horse back tours are also available in the canyon.

Charles Goodnight, born in 1836, moved to Texas at age 10 and began his cattle business at age 20. He fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War and served with the Texas Rangers. His cattle trail spread from the Texas plains to Alamogordo Creek, New Mexico, up to Granada, Colorado. His ranch in Texas, near Palo Duro Canyon, consisted of more than a million acres of land and 100,000 head of cattle. He cross bred Texas Longhorns and Hereford cattle and crossed a buffalo with cattle to produce a "cattalo." He was one of the most prosperous cattlemen in the American west. He passed away in 1929 at Goodnight, TX which was named after him. (www.pbs.org)

Clues: Find the pull off from the canyon road for the Goodnight dugout. take the paved trail to the dugout. Early pioneers actually lived in these similar structures! Take the trail to the left of the dugout to see the roof. Watch out for devil's rope! (barbed wire) With the rooftop to your right, go left 12 paces on the trail. To your right, at the base of a mesquite bush and dead tree is the letterbox. You might use a stick to uncover rocks--there are snakes in this area. Please recover well.
