Inspiration Point

Easy

Bristol, New Hampshire is nestled among the White Mountains and Newfound Lake. With a population of 3,000 in the winter, and three times that in the summer it is a New Hampshire Lover’s destination, so I recommend this letterbox to be a day trip. Hopefully, I’ll place more boxes around the area.

Inspiration Point is on Little Round Top Mountain. It is known for hosting the best Hawk Watches in New Hampshire and has the longest continuous hawk observation on record in the state. On Easter it is known for its sunrise service and weddings have been performed at the “Inspiration Point”. Off in the distance you will see some of New Hampshire’s most beautiful mountains with Mount Cardigan being one the closest out toward the lake.

The best month to visit is during September. This is when the Broadwing Migration comes to a peak, usually during mid-month. However, anytime you visit is worth your while. http://www.hmana.org/ - THE link for hawk migration counting

Directions:
To get to Little Round Top, go to the center of Bristol and continue on Route 3A south toward Franklin. In about 1/8 mile High Street angles off to the right (at the Ambulance station). Follow High Street to the 3rd right turn, New Chester Mt. Road. At the turn there is a sign to the Slim Baker Lodge. Continue along New Chester Mt. Road (it becomes a gravel road in a 1/4 mile or so) to its end in a parking lot at the Slim Baker Conservation Area. From the parking lot, the Slim Baker Lodge is immediately evident. Facing the Lodge go about 20 feet up the path to where another path goes off to the left (it is blocked against wheeled vehicles). There is a sign but its hard to see. Follow the path uphill for about 5-10 minutes to the top of Little Round Top and the Inspiration Point Hawk Watch.

Park your car at the lodge, then hike to the top over the original road to Hill. Enjoy picnicking, hiking trails, and panoramic views overlooking Bristol and the surrounding area. Check out Sleeper Cemetary to find the grave of Thomas D. Fuller, who settled on Round Top following his service in the Revolutionary War.

Clues:

Once you get to the top of the mountain you will see on the left a tall wooden cross. In front of the cross, there will be rows of wooden benches. Go to the cross. All around you will find wooden benches for great views. Take time to notice Mount Cardigan on your left while looking down on the town of Bristol.

Once you reach the cross, turn so your back is facing it. Go approximately thirty paces straight, between the rows of the wooden benches. After thirty paces turn 90 degrees to your left. You will see two square holes that were once part of a foundation. Between the holes, on the left side the letterbox is hidden underneath a rock. Good luck and please return the box the way you found it.

I did not put a stamp pad in the box, so you will have to bring your own. Enjoy!

Things to do in Bristol:

If you’re in Bristol, the half-hour drive around the lake is a must, but there’s plenty more to do all year round. Such as skiing at Ragged Mountain, swimming and picnicing in Wellington Park, and shopping for antiques on Main Street. Check out this website for even more things to do in Bristol. http://www.newfound.k12.nh.us/bes/summer.htm.

I recommend grabbing a sandwich for a picnic from Bristol Market (awesome family style Italian Deli right in the central square) or having an elegant candle lit dinner over looking Newfound Lake at the Cliff Lodge.
