THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT BMS

Planted by Bluebird on 7/12/06 (all fine on 4/26/09) in honor of the end of another great school year. These are best done when school is not in session, for parking's sake!

Directions: Baldwin Middle School in located at the blinking light on Long Hill Road in Guilford, about one mile south of Route 80, or two miles north of Route 1. Drive down the long driveway, and when school's out, drive to the right of the building and park near the basketball hoop (recess/gym area during school and the trail is used by students to do the mile run!). The trails in here are very lovely, and hook up to Bittner Park on Route 77.

Start on the Violet trail to the right of the basketball hoop. The trail which comes out behind the hoop is where your loop will end. The walk should take under one hour, and is about one mile in length.

At the first Y, stay with violet. Use the stones to cross water a short way up and walk until you see a large pronged very rotten stump on your left (about 20 steps off the trail) with one large "sister" down on the ground.. It is about 2 blazes beyond a large nooning tree on the right. In the back of the stump, under bark, you will find one good things about teaching at BMS - Good Readers. Isn't it nice back here?

When you meet the violet circle trail, stay left and the next time you meet it, continue straight on rectangular-blazed Violet. Violet circle will be with you also at this point and for a little while. Cross water on stones again, remaining on that Violet with the rectangular blaze. Soon you will spot a wall on the right - take 22 steps along it from the double tree near the path to another large tree, then 2 steps beyond that under the quartz find another good thing about Baldwin - Good Math Students. Aren't they doing good work on these trails?

Continue on violet until it ends at a T. Go left onto the red, briefly, then left on orange and over a boardwalk and up some steps. Go left, on orange, at the top of the staircase. Watch on your left for the green/orange stripe trail and take it, crossing through the wall. Look on the backside of the wall, low, in a "cave" under rock for Good Thinkers!

At the next T, head left on lime (!) green. Just before the arched bridge, look to the right of the largest rock/boulder on the right for Baldwin Rocks! Haven't they maintained these trails nicely?

Cross the bridge (you can probably see the back of the school now) and soon come out behind the basketball hoop (veer right, off lime green, near the very end), as promised. Shouldn't I put more boxes in here? While teaching I often wish I was out on the trails, not inside!
