Pirate’s Treasure, California Letterbox Series

Note: You will need to complete this series between 1:00pm and 5:00 on weekdays or 10:00am to 5:00 on weekends. Hours may be extended in the summer.

***Note: This series has been retired. But a new box has been placed at the site of box #2. It's called "A Whale of a Box". Check it out, the interpretive center is very well done!

Ahoy Maties! Thar be pirates in these waters! The tale has been told that they’ve buried a chest of pirates treasure somewhere nearby. Ye’ll not likely find it without the help of someone like me who knows where it be hidden!

#1
Locate yer treasure map and set yer sail for the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Palos Verdes Blvd. Sail on Palos Verdes Blvd toward the peninsula. Follow around to the right onto Palos Verdes Drive West. Turn hard to the starboard at the stop sign on Paseo Lunada. Don’t be fooled by the first Paseo Lunada, though. Sail past Lunada Bay Elementary School. Continue to the second Palos Verdes Estates Shoreline Preserve at Via Neve. Drop anchor and go ashore. Look for a ship in this hidden cove, but beware the cliffs. Many a sailor has fallen to his death on the rocks below! The pirates have been afoot in the large grouping of rocks by ye old preserve sign. (Note, the sign now only talks about leashing your pets) Look for signs of pirates under one of the two large rocks in the center. (Note: Beware of rattlesnakes that may live in this area!)

#2
Sail back the way ye came and continue to follow the coast on Palos Verdes Drive West. Ye’ll know ye’ve gone far enough when ye come to the Point Vicente Lighthouse and Interpretive Center. Drop anchor in the parking lot and go inside to learn about the “giant fish of the briney deep”. While you’re there ask a docent for the Pirates Treasure Letterbox. Ye'll find a bonus stamp as well as yer ship.

#3
Shiver me timbers! Those landlubbers may have seen the ship, but they know not of the treasure! Carefully now, and when ye are not being watched, take the path along the cliff toward the light that can save the life of a sailor. Keep to the path as it circles back on itself! If ye want to find the treasure duck between the palm tree and the rocks. Keep a weather eye out for the rock with the "Blue Beard" marking. (Note: Beware of rattlesnakes that may live in this area!) Behind the blue marked rock and under some smaller rocks lies the cursed treasure!

Note: This series was planted as a gift for my nephews. I live out of state. I'd appreciate any feedback on the status of the boxes. A big thank you to my sister and nephews for typing up the clues and replacing the first box for me! Another big thank you to Peter K who replaced the log and box of #3! And thank you to everyone who sends me updates!
