Tam-a-lau- This name comes from the Native American phrase meaning-
"place of big rocks on the ground"

The Tam-a-lau Trail is a 6 mile round trip hike that is quite an experience. The letterbox is only a 1/4 mile up so that all can enjoy at least a part of this wonderful hike. If at all possible, continue the hike and enjoy the beautiful views of the Cascades, both the Deschutes and Crooked Rivers and of course the Island. The first mile is a 600 ft gain and then it's flat on top.

CAUTION: This is Rattlesnake country. Use caution while hiking and retrieving this letterbox. Take a hiking stick and use gloves.

DIRECTIONS:
From Highway 97 follow sign to Cove Palisades State Park.
Find "B" Loop and locate the Tam-a lau Trail head at the west end of "B' Loop.

CLUES:
From the trail head go up, up, up.
A few switch backs.
Hmmm, big rocks on the ground!
Look for a HUGE rock 12-15 ft high right next to the trail on the right.
(It's the first one next to the trail on the right)
A Juniper tree sits behind it with a flat rock at it's base.
The letterbox is under the flat rock.

Enjoy the views!
